The forthcoming single-seater boasts over 1,000 horsepower and weighs less than an F1 car!

New Zealand-based hypercar company Rodin Cars is on a mission to “build the fastest car on earth,” and to that end, has just announced that its second vehicle ever, the track-focused 1,000-plus-horsepower FZero, has entered production. 

Fabricated largely from carbon fibre, the single-seater FZero houses a mid-mounted 4.0-litre hybrid V10 turbo engine making 986 bhp at 9,000 rpm and 670 lb-ft of torque at 7,250 rpm, which combines with the 174-bhp electric motor for a total output of 1,160 horsepower. That power is stretched out over a relatively large and highly aerodynamic frame measuring of 5.5 metres long, 2.2 metres wide, 3.0 metres in wheelbase, and just 1.13 metres in height. Rodin says the car creates upwards of 400 kg of downforce and is highly ambitious with its design, aiming to best F1 car performance, even. 

“Where the purpose of the FZed is to deliver a driver experience aligned with being behind the wheel of a modern Formula One car, the FZero takes that a leap further, aiming to be the ultimate in track performance, far beyond that of anything seen before,” reads a company statement. 

It’s on the right track, too, apparently, with the FZero tipping the scales at just 700 kg, which is 50 kg less than an F1 car. The company 3D-printed a number of lightweight elements for the car, including the titanium gearbox case and exhaust manifolds. 

“The Rodin FZero is the physical representation of the ultimate heights in vehicle performance. Without the restrictions of building to a set of rules, we are able to make the car lighter, more powerful, and produce significantly more downforce,” said David Dicker, founder of Rodin Cars.

“The only real restrictions we face are the laws of physics, and we have even pushed those to the absolute limit. We look forward to bringing the most intense driving experience conceivable to tracks around the world.”

Just 27 units will be built, and Rodin says customers will be able to customize aspects of the car based on how they’ll use it. For the £1.8-million price tag (approximately CDN$2,790,000) Rodin will also throw in custom racewear services, vehicle storage and delivery, and driver training at the brand’s private tracks. 

The Rodin FZero is expected to arrive in 2023.
